Hello, my name is Harry Johnston and I am Secretary General of Wesley College Dublin’s Model United Nations conference for 2024. Working along with our conference director, Tara Sharkey, the WCDMUN team has spent the better part of the academic year organising this conference, and we hope it will be rewarding and exciting for everyone taking part. Between the tireless laminating of placards, the countless emails, and the ordering of supplies, it is safe to say, we are relieved WCDMUN 2024 is finally upon us!
With more than 500 delegates attending the conference this year from around the world, it takes an army to run WCDMUN. All the students at Wesley MUN know full well the effort and determination behind the success of this conference. With numerous staff and student volunteers from Wesley, this conference would not be possible without their help and giving up their free time to run this conference.
Over the years, I’ve been to far too many MUN conferences, so to all the new people joining us today, the most important thing I can say is this: active participation is the key to enjoying any event, especially Model United Nations. For me, it improved my political literacy and allowed
me to make friends for life. For others, these opportunities have opened doors for us that never would have opened otherwise and inspired a keen interest in political science that many want to pursue at third level.
The best moments from MUN don’t always take place during debates, so try to get to know your fellow delegates! Most delegates and chairs are much friendlier than our pretentious exterior suggests and remember, if you have any problems throughout the weekend, talk to your Head Chair, your advisor, the WCDMUN director, or any of the WCDMUN team.
Thank you, and good luck!
-Harry Johnston, Secretary General.
